Smart, John, RSA
1838 – 1899
Apprenticed to his father who was an engraver, Smart studied at the Trustees Academy from 1853 until 1858. He studied landscape under Horatio MacCulloch for a time and specialised like his master in landscapes both English and Scottish often painting in the open air. He also produced a number of paintings particularly watercolours of Sporting scenes namely golf and curling. He also produced illustrations for various publications the best known being "The Golfing Greens of Scotland". He exhibited at the RSA from 1860 until 1899, he became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1871 and an Academician in 1877, he was also a founder member of the Scottish Watercolour Society.
